About Cats the Musical
“Jellicle Cats come out to-night, Jellicle Cats come one come all: The Jellicle Moon is shining bright - Jellicles come to the Jellicle Ball …”
Cats, one of the most popular musicals of ALL TIME, is one of Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber’s wonderful creations. He is known for his brilliant compositions when it comes to musical theatre. Some of his works, that are also still popular other than Cats, are ‘Evita’, ‘Love Never Dies’, and ‘The Phantom of the Opera’.
Cats is, as we all know, based from the book written by T.S. Eliot – ‘Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats’. With the beautiful and effective direction of Sir Trevor Nunn, professional choreography given by Gillian Lynne, creative lyrics of T.S. Eliot, and of course, the wonderful musical creations of Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber, Cats has proven to be one of the best and definitely, the most triumphant musical shows out there.
Did you know? That Cats the Musical has been interpreted into different languages? To be exact – it was translated into 10 languages (German, Japanese, Finnish, Dutch, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish, French and Swedish) – although the title remained to be in English format – Cats.
Cats - Majestic Theater San Antonio
Cats is really fun for a musical. With the Cats known to always break the ‘fourth wall’, you are sure to enjoy the musical play even from the beginning. It’s exciting and I’m sure you and the rest of your family will find the musical to be a real treat. It definitely has the ‘rare’ factor of a musical that appeals to kids and adults… and teens. With Bombalurina, Gus, Grizabella, Cassandra, Exotica, Demeter, Rumpleteazer, Old Deuteronomy (my favorite among the cats – I don’t know why…), and a lot more cats, your world will never be the same. It certainly has all the ‘ingredients’ that makes a very amazing musical – the costumes, the stage design, the plot, the music, the lyrics, genuine moments, great and unique characters, and the intensity of it all… Priceless.
Did you know? That at one time in 1999, Cats London production made £115,363,000 – gross amount? WOW.
Cats the Musical was able to receive a lot of awards and recognitions which include a lot of Tony Awards. In 1983, Cats won the Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Featured Actress (Betty Buckley), Best Book of A musical, Best Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Lighting Design. Also in 1983, Cats received the Best Music, Best Lighting, and Best Costumes awards at Drama Desk Awards.
2 years before that, the musical garnered a couple of Laurence Olivier Awards which include ‘Best New Musical’ and ‘Outstanding Achievement of the Year in Musicals’ for Gillian Lynne. The same year, Outer Critics Circle Award gave them the Best Musical award. In 1982, they won a Grammy award – ‘Best Cast Album’ (this was for the original London cast recording). The year after that (1983), Cats won a Grammy for the second time – same award – only it was for the original Broadway cast recording.
